KENNY GATES TAKES CAREER WIN #100 AT THE FONDA SPEEDWAY WHILE WARNER SCORES THE MODIFIED WIN

By: Ron Szczerba

Fonda, NY – Kenny Gates took his first career win at the “Track of Champions” Fonda Speedway on 7/12/1997 and Saturday evening, almost 28 years later, he scored a very special win, career win #100! Gates took the lead on lap three of the Leatherstocking Credit Union Pro Stock feature and led the rest of the way for his second win of the 2025 season worth $1,000.

“This means a lot,” Gates told Mimi Lazzaro in victory lane after his 100th career win at Fonda. “There’s only legends like your dad that have ever got to triple digits and to be able to even be mentioned amongst guys like that, it’s such an honor. There is so much history here at the Track of Champions, I’m just, you know it is a blast to be here.”

Other winners on Parks Companies Night at Fonda were Rocky Warner ($4,000 win in the Thunder on the Thruway Series Amsterdam Truck Center Modified event), Tyler Peet ($1,500 to win in the Thunder on the Thruway Series Swagger Factory Apparel Sportsman event), Rocco Constantino (Montgomery County Office for Aging Inc. Limited Sportsman), Kerrie Hollenback (DOHC) and Ken Hollenback (SOHC) in the Fonda Fair Four Cylinder division.

“You ain’t kidding,” Rocky said to Mimi Lazzaro when she asked how about that getting the monkey off your back (Rocky’s last feature win at Fonda coming on 6/10/2023 along with a win in the Bill Ag Memorial race in 2024). “We have a hot rod, we’ve been trying different things, I got out of my realm of what I always do, trying different things and it has been working.”

“I was trying to roll it in there on top a little bit because I figured that I would end up there,”
Peet said in victory lane. “The top was very good for awhile until it crumbled off a little, but I felt good on both the bottom and the top.”

The Mohawk Valley Vintage Dirt Modified Series was also in action on Kenny Shoemaker/Frank Trinkaus Memorial event night with the winners including Mike Wheeler (MVVDMS) Antiques, Will Reed (MVVDMS) Late Models, Harry Baldwin (MVVDMS) Mystiques, Jack Miller (MVVDMS) Modifieds, and Jipp Ortiz (MVVDMS) Sportsman. More on the MVVDMS events and Shoemaker/Trinkaus Memorial Tribute event later today in a separate release.

Rocky Warner drew the number one starting position for the 30-lap Thunder on the Thruway Series Modified feature, taking the early lead at the drop of Joe Kriss’ green flag with Ronnie Johnson in the second position. Stewart Friesen started the event in the tenth position and by lap eight he was already in the fifth position with Warner now out to a straightaway advantage.

Friesen got by JaMike Sowle for the fourth position on lap nine with the first of only two caution flags in the event out on lap 13 after Adam McAuliffe slowed in turns three and four. Third place starter Bobby Hackel IV took the second position away from Johnson on the restart with Warner, Hackel, Johnson, seventh place starter Jack Lehner and Friesen in the top ten.

Lehner and Friesen went around Johnson on both the inside and outside on lap 16, taking the third and fourth positions away with Friesen also getting by Lehner for the third position one lap later. Friesen was in the second position on lap 18 after getting by Hackel with Warner now leading by just over three seconds.

Friesen slowly cut into Warner’s advantage, bringing it down to just under two seconds with the yellow flag out with three laps remaining to close up the field. Warner led on the single file restart, pulling away over the last three laps to win the event, the 11th of his career in the division at Fonda, on his sponsor Parks Companies Night! Friesen, Hackel, Lehner, and Johnson completed the top five.

Defending Track Champion Alex Yankowski started the event in the 20th position after issues during his heat race and ended up with an eighth place finish.

“I saw Ronnie (Johnson) on the restart, but I knew Stewy (Stewart Friesen) had to be close,” Warner said after an emotional win. “I just felt so good on the bottom of four here, it didn’t feel rubbered up, it felt pretty grippy, so I knew that it was gonna be tough to get around me on the outside. But anytime Stewart Friesen is here you know he’s in the mix. Hats off to my guys, this is awesome.”

Mike Kalkbrenner led at the start of the 25-lap Swagger Factory Apparel Sportsman feature with Jonny Feagles in tow. Feagles tried the outside of the leader during the first two laps, racing side by side at times, with Kalkbrenner able to hang on to the lead. The only yellow flag of the event flew on lap seven with Tyler Peet and tenth place starter Chad Edwards the new second and third place cars on the restart.

Peet took the lead at the line to complete lap 11 with Edwards also getting by Kalkbrenner for the second position. Peet pulled away at one point in his Ted’s Body Shop #12T, but lap cars came into play with only a few laps remaining allowing Edwards to close in on the leader. Peet was able to hold off Edwards for his second win of the season and the third of his career at Fonda, going under the checkered flag first with Edwards right on his rear bumper.

Edwards, ninth place starter Tanner Warner, Kalkbrenner, and Dumond completed the top five.

“It was just about keeping Chad (Edwards) behind me,” Peet said after the victory. “I actually had a blast, that was probably one of the most fun times I’ve had here at Fonda. The track was very racy, it was awesome.”

Luke Horning led the first two laps of the 20-lap Leatherstocking Credit Union Pro Stock feature from his pole position start with outside pole sitter Kenny Gates in second. Gates took over the lead on lap three with a pass on the inside of the backstretch with Nick Stone, Ivan Joslin, and Beau Ballard also getting by Horning for position.

Two consecutive yellow flags slowed the field on laps ten and eleven with Joslin taking over the second position on the lap ten restart. Joslin pressured Gates heavily over the remaining laps, trying to get to the inside of the leader in the turns, but it was Gates taking the win in the Upstate Spray Foam, Dirt Track Digest TV, Palmer’s Service Center #35 followed by Joslin, Ballard, Stone, and Mike Hill completing the top five.

“I can’t believe we’ve had the good fortune to have everybody with me here tonight,” Gates said after the win. “Leo, Joe, and Brandon have been with me for a long time. My brother has been with me since the very start and now we’re starting over with his daughter (Haleigh Gates), I am truly blessed.”

“I really had to stick it down there on the bottom, I think that there was some rubber left from the Modifieds,” Gates continued to say. “I had to protect the bottom; the top was definitely not the fast way around. Luckily we were able to get it in there and hold him (#49 Ivan Joslin) off. My car got a little better as the tires heated up, so the more we went the better I got, but boy on those restarts I had to hold him off hard.”

“Win more I guess,” Gates told Mimi Lazzaro after she asked where do you go from here. “I’m still as happy as I ever was for the next one, I want to win more, this is what it is all about. This is so much fun, we’re still doing good, and as long as we are we’re gonna keep after it.”

“I want to thank my wife Cathy, who has been with me since day one,” Gates concluded. “From getting my first car, getting going, without her I couldn’t do any of this. So, I want to dedicate this 100th win to her, she’s been with me through all of it, if it wasn’t for her I’m not here tonight.”

Fourteen year old Rocco Constantino took the lead away on a lap three restart in the 15-lap Montgomery County Office for Aging Inc. feature after two cautions slowed the field on the first two laps. Another yellow slowed the event on lap four but there was no slowing Constantino on this night as he maintained a straightaway advantage over the last five laps of the event for his first win of the season and the third of his career in the division in the Ageless Aesthetics #44 DKM car.

Josh Persse, Bob Rhinehardt, Walter Cook, and Mason Gray completed the top five in the event.

“It feels great, Constantino said after the win. “I was able to get by for the lead on the restart and from that point on chose the bottom on all of the other restarts.”

Len St. Andrews led lap one of the Fonda Fair Four Cylinder event with Kerrie Hollenback taking the lead on lap two after starting fourth. Kerrie led the remaining laps for the overall win followed in the top five by Jay Ingersoll, Ken Hollenback (SOHC winner), St. Andrews, and Wayne Russell Jr.

“We got a good starting spot tonight and once I got out front I didn’t hear any of the faster cars behind me, Kerrie Hollenback said after his first win of the season and the 45th of his career at Fonda. “I kept listening behind me but then decided that I had better focus ahead of me not who was behind me.

“I hate running second to anybody I don’t care who it is,” Ken Hollenback said after his fourth victory of the season and the 108th of his career in the division.”

Next Saturday, June 28 at the Fonda Speedway, Shepherd Communication & Security Night presents Fan Appreciation Night with a $5 grandstand admission.
