“I grew up at Fonda Speedway,” commented DTD co-owner GT Smith.  “I live in Florida now, but Fonda Speedway will always be my home.  I spent all of my Saturday nights as a kid at Fonda until my early 20’s.  I couldn’t be happier to make a deal with Brett Deyo to bring Fonda Speedway to more people.”

In 2019, Dirt Track Digest TV broadcast a handful of races from the Track of Champions including the season opener, the Firecracker 50 as well as the season ending Fonda 200 weekend.  Dirt Track Digest partner FLX Media Group also produced the Firecracker event for broadcast across the country on MAV-TV. As a result of the success of those events, Fonda Speedway promoter Brett Deyo showed interest in adding more events to the 2020 schedule.  DTD TV was happy to oblige.

“Fonda Speedway has some of the best racing around,” said Fonda Speedway promoter Brett Deyo.  “We have great crowds every week, but we aren’t satisfied with that. We want people from all over the country to be able to watch the phenomenal racing when they can’t be here with us.”

The first broadcast of 2020 at the Fonda Speedway is slated for April 18 with the season opener before April 25 the Modified division races for $8,000 to win on April 25.  Fonda 200 weekend is again slated for September with racing on the 18th and 19th of the month with the $53,000 200-lap finale taking center stage on the 19th.

Short Track Super Series, Fonda & Georgetown Speedways Selected As EMPA ‘Promotional Effort of the Year’

MILLSBORO, DE – BD Motorsports Media LLC has been selected by the membership of the Eastern Motorsport Press Association (EMPA) to receive the ‘Promotional Effort of the Year’ recognition.

Founded in 1969, EMPA is an organization of professional writers, broadcasters, announcers, videographers and photographers working in the motorsports industry, along with associate and corporate members.

The ceremony and awards dinner, presented by NASCAR, takes place on Saturday, Jan. 11 at the Crowne Plaza in King of Prussia, Pa., as part of the 47th annual EMPA convention.

The distinction – voted upon by members of EMPA – recognizes the BD Motorsports Media-run Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By Sunoco, Fonda (N.Y.) Speedway and Georgetown (Del.) Speedway.

“It’s an honor to be recognized by the EMPA membership,” Brett Deyo of BD Motorsports Media LLC said. “This is a credit to our whole team. There are so many people who work hard throughout the race season on our behalf to keep a touring series and two tracks, located six hours apart, operating successfully.”

The Short Track Super Series broke new ground in 2019 with the most lucrative dirt Modified championship payout in the nation. By winning the Insinger Performance/Sunoco Race Fuels ‘Grand Championship’ encompassing the STSS North and South regions and the American Racer Cup, Matt Sheppard of Savannah, N.Y., will receive $58,500 cash.

The STSS Modified circuit completed events in four states – New York, New Jersey, Delaware and Pennsylvania – while maintaining an average car count of 41.7 per event. 291 competitors took part in at least one Modified event. The Crate 602 Sportsman series saw 232 entrants received over the 11 total races.

The first season for BD Motorsports Media promotion at the historic Fonda Speedway saw an upswing in competitor participation and fans in the grandstand. Among the season highlights were the $53,000-to-win Fonda 200 in September, the nationally televised on MAV-TV ‘Firecracker 50’ in July and a massive ‘Dollar Night’ in May featuring $1 grandstand admission.

A specials-only format at Georgetown Speedway included a number of high-profile events including the two-day Mid-Atlantic Championship Weekend with a pay structure of nearly $90,000, the Melvin L. Joseph Memorial and the ‘Blast at the Beach’ filmed for national television by the cameras of MAV-TV.

FONDA SPEEDWAY 2019 YEAR IN REVIEW

By: Ron Szczerba

Fonda, NY – The 2019 season at the “Track of Champions” Fonda Speedway has been called by some the “resurgence” of the historical Montgomery County Fairgrounds half mile track, with large crowds and increased car counts witnessed during the first season under Brett Deyo and the BD Motorsports Media LLC management team.

The top performers from the 2019 season at Fonda were honored on Saturday, December 7 at the Fonda Speedway Awards Banquet hosted at Treviso by Mallozzi’s in Albany, N.Y. where a total of over $50,000 was paid out in point fund money to all six divisions including the Sunoco Modifieds, the Swagger Factory Apparel Crate 602 Sportsman, the Algonkin Motel Pro Stocks, the Montgomery County Office for Aging Limited Sportsman, the Trackside Body Works Street Stocks, and the Four Cylinder Cruisers.

The total of over $50,000 was a combination of the Fonda Speedway 50/50 point fund money and bonus money from American Racer for those who made the top 15 in overall points in the American Racer Cup standings with 2019 Sunoco Modified Track Champion Rocky Warner getting $10,125 for his first career modified championship at Fonda.

“But the biggest thing that stuck out to me was that we paid out $494,770 this year before tonight’s banquet,” Fonda Speedway promoter Brett Deyo told the crowd at the awards banquet.

SUNOCO MODIFIED SUMMARY

A total of 18 events were held in the Sunoco Modified division in 2019 with seven different drivers winning those events. Stewart Friesen led the way with six feature wins moving him up to the fifth spot on the all-time win list with 60. The six victories included big wins in the $10,000 to win “Firecracker 50” in July, which was televised on MAV TV along with the $53,000 win in the “Fonda 200” in the last race of the season.

Because of Friesen’s commitment to the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series he didn’t compete at Fonda on a weekly basis but was still able to finish fourth in the final point standings winning $2,000 from the Fonda point fund and $4,750 from the American Racer Cup points for a total of $6,750.

Next in line with total wins was Sunoco Modified point champion Rocky Warner with five victories in 2019 on his way to the title. With his point championship in the Sunoco Modified division at Fonda, Warner made a little history of his own as he now has point titles in all four of the different divisions that he has competed in at the “Track of Champions” including the Swagger Factory Apparel Crate 602 Sportsman in 2014, 2015, 2016, & 2017; the Algonkin Motel Pro Stock division in 2011; and the Trackside Body Works Street Stocks as co-champion in 2005 and champion in 2007.

Warner’s car owner Jake Spraker has also seen a lot of success in the past at Fonda with this year’s title by Warner being the 10th of Spraker’s career at the “Track of Champions”. Looking back Spraker won a title in the Pro Stock division with Steve Welch in 1999; Crate 602 Sportsman titles with Warner in 2015, 2016, & 2017; a Modified title with Mike Romano in 1989 along with a Fonda 200 win that year; three Modified titles with Bobby Varin in 2005, 2006, & 2008; and one Modified title with Ronnie Johnson in 2016.

Danny Varin was next in line with three wins at Fonda in 2019, finishing a career best third in the final point standings while Matt Sheppard, Dave Constantino, Bobby Varin, and Michael Maresca all had one feature win at Fonda in 2019.

The win by Constantino was the first of his career in the Sunoco Modified division at Fonda.

SWAGGER FACTORY APPAREL CRATE 602 SPORTSMAN SUMMARY

The Swagger Factory Apparel Crate 602 Sportsman division saw first time track champion Tim Hartman Jr. leading the way with seven feature wins in a total of 16 events. Six other drivers besides Hartman Jr. won features in the division including 2011 Track Champion Mark Mortensen, Adam McAuliffe, and Brian Calabrese who all had two feature wins apiece while Cody Clark, Chad Edwards, and Nick Scavia all had one win apiece.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY OFFICE FOR AGING INC. LIMITED SPORTSMAN SUMMARY
