Evening Showers Postpone Fonda Speedway ‘Firecracker 50’ to Sunday, July 5

FONDA, NY – A late afternoon steady rain moved over Fonda Speedway on Wednesday, prompting the postponement of the Fuccillo Automotive Group ‘Firecracker 50’ to Sunday (July 5).

The Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By Sunoco annual visit to the ‘Track of Champions’ drew a huge field of race cars. Forty-five STSS Modifieds and 34 STSS Crate 602 Sportsman had signed in for competition. With rain still falling shortly after 7 p.m. and the track surface saturated, the decision was made to postpone the event.

“The forecast looked to be positive for late afternoon and evening, but a large pop-up cell from the north soaked us at the last minute,” STSS organizer Brett Deyo said. “We felt our best option was to postpone the event to Sunday with a more positive forecast.”

All wristbands from Wednesday will be honored on Sunday.

The STSS Modifieds had not completed their draw for position yet. The STSS Crate 602 Sportsman draw will stand. New entries will be accepted for both.

Admission for the Sunday event is $20. Seniors pay $18. Kids 11 and under are FREE. Pit admission is $30 (Fonda Members) or $35 (Non-Members).

Gates will open at 4 p.m., with hot laps at 6 p.m. and racing at 7 p.m.

The event will be streamed live on Dirt Track Digest TV.

With the ‘Firecracker 50’ postponed to Sunday, two days of racing are planned for the Track of Champions this weekend. Saturday’s (July 4) event, presented by Recovery Sports Grill, includes Sunoco Modifieds ($4,000 to win), Swagger Factory Apparel Crate 602 Sportsman, Algonkin Motel Pro Stocks ($1,776 to win), Montgomery County Office for Aging Limited Sportsman, Roberts Towing & Recovery Street Stocks and Mohawk Valley Vintage Dirt Modifieds.

On Saturday, gates open at 4 p.m., with hot laps at 6 p.m. and racing at 7 p.m.

Adult admission for Saturday is $11. Seniors pay $9. Kids 11 and under are FREE. Pit admission is $30 (Fonda Members) or $35 (Non-Members).

SECOND ANNUAL $10,000 TO WIN FIRECRACKER 50 AT THE FONDA SPEEDWAY THIS WEDNESDAY, JULY 1 – AND YES FANS ARE ALLOWED IN THE GRANDSTANDS

By: Ron Szczerba

Fonda, NY – Guess who’s back, back again? Grandstands and infield are open this Wednesday night at Fonda Speedway for the second annual “Firecracker 50” with masks and social distancing required. The event will pay $10,000 to win for the Sunoco Modifieds and $2,000 to win for the Swagger Factory Apparel Crate 602 Sportsman.

Gates will open at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 1 with hot laps at 6:45 p.m. and racing at 7:30 p.m.

The Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled by Sunoco has led the Northeast dirt Modified community back to racing through the COVID-19 pandemic.

Competing in North Carolina, South Carolina, Maryland, and Pennsylvania, the STSS is back to the Empire State on Wednesday, July 1 when Fuccillo Automotive Group presents the “Firecracker 50” at Fonda Speedway.

The hallowed “Track of Champions” plays host to the Halmar International North Region for both the Modifieds and Crate 602 Sportsman in high-paying events. The STSS Modifieds race 50 laps for $10,000 to win and $4,000 for second, $1,000 for 10th and $400 just to take the green flag. A very robust $2,000 goes to the Crate 602 Sportsman victor for their 25-lap main.

The event serves as Race No. 2 for the STSS Modified North Region after kicking off the title fight, albeit delayed, on June 16 at Pa.’s Big Diamond Speedway. The Crate 602 Sportsman will open their North Region point battle at Fonda.

Last year, the “Firecracker” at Fonda lived up to its name with a wild finish that brought the crowd to its feet. Stewart Friesen, after pitting for a flat tire, pulled off the last-lap, last-turn power move on Matt Sheppard to pick up the $10,000-plus top prize.

After his “Anthracite Assault” victory at Big Diamond, Billy Pauch Jr. sits atop the North Region point standings at Fonda over legendary Jimmy Horton.

The complete “Firecracker 50” information sheet has been posted on the STSS website with times, rules and general information: http://shorttracksuperseries.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Firecracker50InfoSheet.pdf

The event will be streamed live on Dirt Track Digest TV (www.dirttrackdigest.tv) in addition to in-person attendance.

FIRST CAREER WIN AT FONDA NETS JEFF HEOTZLER $4,000 IN THE FIRECRACKER SHOWDOWN

By: Ron Szczerba

Fonda, NY – The “Jeffer” as he is called by many, Jeff Heotzler won his first career Sunoco Modified feature at the “Track of Champions” Fonda Speedway on Saturday evening in the $4,000 to win Firecracker Showdown. The race was named as such as it was a shakedown run for the Firecracker 50 to be held on Wednesday, July 1.

Saturday evenings racing events were sponsored by long time track sponsors School House Pools Inc. of Amsterdam, NY.

Heotzler won the event in the iconic Palmer’s Service Center #76 Teo Pro car owned by Carole and Alton Palmer. Heotzler was named as the driver of the car earlier this year and the combined experience of both Heotzler and car owner and former driver Alton Palmer make it a very potent race team for sure.

In the Fuccillo Automotive Group Mike Cole Memorial victory lane, Mimi Lazzaro was honored to interview Heotzler, who her father Lou Lazzaro used to race with during his career while Mimi grew up around them all in the pit area.

“Thanks to Alton and Carole for choosing me to drive this racecar,” Heotzler said in victory lane. “We really couldn’t get a handle on this Teo Pro car, but we were finally able to do so this week. Hopefully, we can keep it up front.”

Heotzler dedicated the race to Jared Petruska who passed away earlier this year. Petruska and his family owned the Atlas Paving #66 who Heotzler drove for at times during his career. “This one is for Jared Petruska,” Heotzler said.

Early day rain made some hard work for the track crew to get the track ready for the racing events on Saturday evening, but they did a tremendous job which led to some really quick lap times during the evening.

In heat three, Danny Varin came close to breaking the track record of his father Bobby who set the record back on April 11, 2009 with a lap of 18.136. Danny’s turned a lap of 18.199 secs in heat race number three on Saturday evening.

Ed Biittig Sr. won the 50/50 on Saturday evening worth $751.

Fonda Speedway head starter Joe Kriss opened the racing program with a fantastic rendition of the National Anthem.

DTD TV did a fantastic job videoing the racing events on Saturday at Fonda as there were no fans allowed in the grandstands for the racing events.

It was the first night of handicapping of the 2020 racing season and after winning heat race number one Jeff Heotzler was handicapped to start on the outside pole and he took the lead at the drop of Joe Kriss’ green flag in the 30-lap Sunoco Modified feature. After starting in the sixth position, Danny Varin gained two spots up to fourth just before the first of only two caution flags slowed the event.

On the restart, Craig Hanson was the new second place car with Varin just behind in third with ninth place starter Josh Hohenforst and 10th place starter and defending track champion Rocky Warner completing the top five. At the halfway point in the event the top five remained the same with the leader in lap traffic by lap 16.

Varin got by Hanson on lap 17 for the second position and one lap later Varin started putting pressure on the leader. Hohenforst and Varin swapped the second position a couple of times with the final caution of the event out with five laps to go for Hanson whose great run came to an end with a flat right rear tire. Hanson would pit for a new tire and rejoin the rear of the field.

Warner took the third position away from Hohenforst with three laps to go with 14th place starter Matt DeLorenzo following him through for the fourth position. Warner got by Varin for the second position with two laps to go in the event but Heotzler kept the car straight and true to the checkered flag for his first career win at Fonda.

Warner, Varin, DeLorenzo, and Hohenforst completed the top five along with a great run by Scott Huber to finish sixth.

“This is another one for the bucket list,” Heotzler said. “I haven’t got many years left but it’s always great to come to Fonda. Thanks to Carole and Alton for giving me this opportunity.”

Six caution flags slowed the Swagger Factory Apparel Crate 602 Sportsman feature event with Kevin Chaffee leading at the drop of the green flag from his pole position start. Outside pole starter Ricky Quick took the lead away on lap two and held it until lap six when the first caution flag flew.

Chaffee got the lead on the restart while defending track champion Tim Hartman Jr. took away the second position after starting the event in the fifth spot. Chad Edwards started the event in the 25th position in the John Kollar Motorsports #10% and by lap 10 he was already up to the third position.

Tucker O’Connor had a great run come to an end on lap 11 as he came to a stop in turn three while running fifth, bringing out the caution and on the restart Edwards went from third to first as he took the lead in the event. Chaffee pressured the leader at times and kept it close, but Edwards got the win, the eighth of his career in the division, followed in the top five by Chaffee, 10th place starter JaMike Sowle, Hartman Jr., and eighth place starter Cody Clark.

“It’s been a great start to the season for us,” Edwards said in victory lane. “I tore the left front off of the car in our heat race and got it fixed but while lining up to go out for the feature I noticed the tow was off as it just didn’t look right so I went back to our pit area and the crew adjusted it.”

“We switched to a new Bicknell car for this season and thanks to John Kollar for sending me the money all winter long from his Florida home in order to make this all happen.”

The Montgomery County Office for Aging feature was one of if not the most exciting of the evening with Johnny Young leading at the start from his fifth position start with Stephen Gray in tow. Two-time winner in 2020 Brett Mortensen started the event in the 11th position and by lap two he was already up to the third position.

Mortensen took the second position away from Gray on lap six and from that point on Mortensen was the fastest car on the track as he caught up to the leader by lap 10 of the 15-lap event. Young and Mortensen were side by side for the lead many times throughout the remainder of the event with Young able to hang on to the lead each time.

On the final lap going into turn four to the checkered flag, Mortensen got alongside of Young with the two making contact coming out of the turn forcing Mortensen into the front stretch wall which broke the steering on the #1B. The two cars remained hooked together, side by side  to the checkered flag but with no steering Mortensen hit the infield wall in turn one after the cars separated and Young pulled ahead, destroying the front end on Mortensen’s car and sheering off the left front tire.

Young got his first career win in the division in the event while Mortensen ended up second followed by Carter Gibbons, Dylan Eldred, and Gray.

The 20-lap Algonkin Motel Pro Stock feature began with Jason Morrison in the lead at the drop of the green flag followed by third place starter Jim Normoyle. On lap eight, 12th place starter Nick Stone was in the top five after getting by Ivan Joslin and one lap later Normoyle took the lead away from Morrison on the outside of turn four.

On a restart after a lap 10 caution, Stone took the second spot away and on lap 13 Stone was the race leader after making a pass on the leader on the inside of turn three. One final caution slowed the event with two laps to go allowing Normoyle to close in for a final chance at the win.

Stone pulled away on the restart to his second win of the season and the 48th of his career in the division over Normoyle, 16th place starter Josh Coonradt, 10th place starter Kenny Gates, and 11th place starter and defending track champion Luke Horning.

Lou Gancarz led all 15 laps in the Robert’s Towing & Recovery Street Stock feature for his first career win at Fonda over Dave Horning Sr., defending track champion Jason Samrov, Mark Burch, and Josh Samrov. Al Relyea finished the event in the second position but was disqualified in post-race inspection.

Ken Hollenback led all 15 laps in the Four Cylinder Cruiser feature event for his 52nd career win in the division in the SOHC followed by Dale VanAllen, John Napoli (DOHC winner), Zach McSpirit, and Shawn Hemstreet.

SCHOOL HOUSE POOLS INC. TO SPONSOR A $4,000 TO WIN SUNOCO MODIFIED FIRECRACKER SHAKEDOWN EVENT THIS SATURDAY, JUNE 27 AT FONDA

By: Ron Szczerba

Fonda, NY – This Saturday, June 27 the racing action continues at the “Track of Champions” Fonda Speedway with a special $4,000 to win Sunoco Modified Firecracker Shakedown plus all other divisions in action on School House Pools Inc. Night.

Gates will open at 4:00 p.m. with warm-ups at 6:00 p.m. and racing at 7:00 p.m.

The original 2020 Fonda Speedway schedule also had the Rapid Tire USAC East Coast Sprint Cars on the schedule for June 27 but that has since been postponed and below is what was posted on the Fonda Speedway Facebook page earlier this week.

“Unfortunately with the Afton Motorsports Park not opening until the weekend of July 3rd, a mutual decision was made between weekend promoter Brett Deyo, and the USAC East Coast Sprint Car Series, to postpone this weekend’s events at the Fonda Speedway,” according to an announcement made earlier this week. “It was agreed that we did not want to risk our drivers and teams having to make an extremely long haul for just one event in New York.”

“Together with promoter Brett Deyo, we will work together to look for suitable dates to reschedule the weekend in the 2020 season. If a suitable two-day weekend for the Afton Motorsports Park, Fonda Speedway weekend is not found in 2020, the weekend will stay on the series schedule for the 2021 season.”

The schedule only gets busier as there are now three events scheduled at Fonda in just eight days starting with the June 27 event described above. Then on Wednesday, July 1 the “Track of Champions” will host the Fuccillo Automotive Group Firecracker 50, Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By Sunoco Modifieds 50 laps, $10,000 to win plus STSS Crate 602 Sportsman, 25-laps for $2,000 to win.

The final event of the eight-day stretch will be on Saturday, July 4 when the Recovery Sports Grill presents the Red, White & Blue Special. It will be Dollar Dog Night with a $4,000 to win Sunoco Modifieds feature, a $1,776 to win Algonkin Pro Stock event plus a regular show in all other divisions along with the Mohawk Valley Vintage Dirt Modified Series (MVVDMS).

FRIESEN GOES BACK TO BACK AT FONDA ON KELLY’S MEAT MARKET NIGHT

By: Ron Szczerba

Fonda, NY – People were invited to come to the Fonda Speedway to dine at Denise’s Concessions on Saturday evening and quite a few people did just that and along with the drive in on the infield it was a great night of racing at the “Track of Champions”.

When the final checkered flag flew on Kelly’s Meat Market Night the winners in all divisions included Stewart Friesen (Sunoco Modifieds), Joe Williams (Swagger Factory Apparel Crate 602 Sportsman), Brett Mortensen (Montgomery County Office for Aging Inc. Limited Sportsman), Josh Coonradt (Algonkin Motel Pro Stocks), Al Relyea (Robert’s Towing & Recovery Street Stocks), Ken Hollenbeck (SOHC Four Cylinder Cruisers), and David Frame (DOHC Four Cylinder Cruisers) who all visited the Fuccillo Automotive Group Mike Cole Memorial victory lane.

The 50-50 for the evening was worth $1,761 and was won by Mike Glock of Scotia, NY.

Mimi Lazzaro did a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem before all the action started on Father’s Day weekend 2020.

The 30-lap Sunoco Modified feature began with Modified Rookie Adam McAuliffe and Danny Varin on the front row with Varin taking the lead at the drop of Joe Kriss’ green flag. Varin held the advantage through two caution flags before sixth place starter Michael Maresca took over the lead on the backstretch on lap five.

The caution flag flew again shortly afterwards and, on the restart, 10th place starter Stewart Friesen went from sixth to third and one lap later got by both Varin and Maresca for the lead on the outside of turn four. Invader Mat Williamson started the event in the eighth starting position and by lap 10 he was up to the third spot behind Stewart Friesen and Maresca.

While Stewart Friesen was running the outside groove, Maresca stuck with the low lane and was keeping pace with the leader, side by side at times, until Stewart Friesen decided it was time to make a lane change to the low line on lap 11 when he was also in heavy lap traffic. Two more yellow flags slowed the field as Jessica Friesen, Varin, and McAuliffe all fell out of the event with various issues.

Stewart Friesen was up to the challenge that restarts can often bring and maintained the lead through each of them. From lap 17 to the checkered flag Stewart Friesen was in lap traffic but weaved back and forth from the inside to the outside to get by them and stay in front of his competitors as he went on to a back to back win, the 62nd of his career at Fonda, in the Halmar #44 Bicknell car.

Maresca, Williamson, 12th place starter Matt DeLorenzo, and 15th place starter and defending Sunoco Track Champion Rocky Warner completed the top five.

Stewart’s son Parker celebrated with a roof dance on victory lane before Mimi Lazzaro got to interview the winner who said “I just love this race track, no matter where you start you just have to find a groove and a place to race. Tonight, there was brown up on top and the bottom was good too so you could race anywhere you wanted.”

Joe Williams took advantage of his front row starting position to take the lead at the drop of the green flag in the 25-lap Swagger Factory Apparel Crate 602 Sportsman feature with fourth place starter Brian Calabrese in tow. Chad Edwards started the event in the seventh position and on lap three he was able to get by Michael Wagner-Fitzgerald for the third position while sixth place starter Mark Mortensen also got by Wagner-Fitzgerald for the fourth position.

Edwards got by Calabrese for the second position on lap six while ninth place starter Brian Borst also gained positions into the top five. Lap traffic slowed Williams on lap eight allowing Edwards to close in on the leader and from that point on in the event the leader was in lap traffic with Edwards trying whatever he could to get by both the lap cars and the leader.

Williams made a feature win saving move on the final lap as he got by two lap cars on the inside of turns one and two to give himself a little breathing room. That was short lived however as Edwards was on his rear bumper again going into turn three but Williams was able to hold on to the lead and win the event by 0.298 seconds over Edwards in the Wagon Train BBQ sponsored #19L for his first career win in the division.

Calabrese, Mortensen, and Borst completed the top five.

“This is my first win on dirt in the crate sportsman and it seems like it took forever to get it done,” Williams said in victory lane. “But we kept the car in one piece and got the win so I’m very happy.”

Williams had one other win during his career at Fonda which came in the “Open” Sportsman division back on May 1, 2004.

Pete Nowicki Jr. started on the pole position in the 15-lap Montgomery County Office for Aging Inc. Limited Sportsman feature event and took the lead at the drop of the green flag. Carter Gibbons started the event in the third position and was the new second place car at the completion of lap one.

On lap two on the inside groove on the back stretch, Gibbons was the new race leader and he immediately stretched out his advantage to a comfortable margin. After starting the event in the 12th position, last weeks winner Brett Mortensen was up to the second position on lap six after getting by both Johnny Young and Dylan Eldred for the spot.

At that point Gibbons was out to a straightaway advantage but lap after lap Mortensen was able to cut into that lead and by lap nine, he was running lap times a half second faster than Gibbons. With two laps to go, Mortensen was on Gibbons rear bumper and on the outside groove on the backstretch Mortensen got by Gibbons for the lead. Mortensen went on to a back to back win after winning on opening night for his fourth career win in the division in the 518 Realty sponsored Teo car.

Gibbons, Eldred, Young, and Kyle Dingman completed the top five.

“I was trying to stay off the gas as much as I could to keep the rear end underneath me in the slick areas on the track,” Mortensen told Mimi Lazzaro on victory lane.

The 20-lap Algonkin Motel Pro Stock feature was an exciting one with Justin Knight the race leader at the drop of the green flag. On lap four, defending track champion Luke Horning was the new race leader after getting by Knight on the outside of turns three and four. The yellow flag was out one lap later for last weeks winner Nick Stone whose hood came undone and he was forced to the hot pit to remove the hood and restart at the rear of the field.

Sixth place starter Josh Coonradt was now making his way to the front, taking the second position away from Knight on lap eight and setting his sights on Horning for the lead. On lap 11, Coonradt was right on Horning’s rear bumper for the lead with 11th place starter Kenny Gates now the new third place car.

Coonradt went between a lap car and Horning for the lead on lap 12 in turn three with the caution out shortly afterwards. On the restart, Coonradt continued to lead with Horning, Gates, Knight, and Stone who did a remarkable job to get back to the front without a hood on his race car.

Stone and Horning were running side by side for the second position with five laps to go allowing Coonradt to stretch out his advantage. The final caution of the event was out on lap 16 closing up the field and allowing for a great finish. Coonradt stayed low on the track with Stone running the high groove over the final laps, side by side at times, with Coonradt holding on to get the victory, the fifth of his career in the division at Fonda.

Stone, Horning, Gates, and 17th place starter Devon Camenga completed the top five in the event.

“After the heat race and warm-ups, I didn’t know if I had anything to compete for the win with,” Coonradt said in victory lane. “Under the yellow I was looking to make something happen when we went green again and we made it here to victory lane.”

Michael Arnold led the first two laps of the Robert’s Towing & Recovery Street Stock feature before last weeks winner Al Relyea took over the lead on lap three after starting seventh and went on to a back to back win after winning last weeks event. Defending Track Champion Jason Samrov was second followed by Dave Horning Sr., Arnold, and Lou Gancarz.

Ken Hollenbeck led all 15 laps in the Four Cylinder Cruiser feature after starting fourth and went on to his 51st career win in the division in the SOHC while David Frame was declared the winner in the DOHC class after finishing second in the event behind Hollenbeck. John Napoli, Zach McSpirit, and Wayne Russell completed the top five in the event.
